Indigestion or upset stomach is commonly known as dyspepsia. It is not a disease. Dyspepsia describes uneasiness or pain in the upper abdomen. It is also defined as a constant or recurrent uneasiness centred in the upper abdomen and it can be caused because of many conditions. Dyspepsia is basically group of symptoms that frequently comprise nausea, bloating, and burping.
Dyspepsia or Indigestion is mainly caused because stomach acid makes contact with the mucosa of the digestive system, which is sensitive defensive coating of the digestive system. Stomach acids split the mucosa, which causes pain and inflammation, which activate the symptoms of indigestion.
Commonly the causes of dyspepsia or indigestion are related with what we are eating and/or drinking. In some cases it can also caused because infection or some medications.
There are three main types of dyspepsia:
- Ulcer- in which the main indication is pain.
- Motility-in which the main indications are may be bloating and gas.
- Reflux- in which the main sign is same like heartburn.
