A hiccough is an unusual style of breathing movement involving a rapid intake of air because of an automatic narrowing of the diaphragm accompanied by shutting of the vocal part (glottis) of the larynx. Diaphragm is the muscle under your lungs that helps you breathe in. The sudden inspiration is the result of a rapid contraction of the diaphragm. Closing of the glottis then stops the inward air. The piece of air hit the closed glottis to create the typical sound of “hic”. Sometime hiccough is also referred a hiccup. Hiccups are frequently rhythmic. If self-limited, they are just given a minor trouble, but prolonged hiccups can turn into some major medical problem.
A hiccough is a reaction that you cannot control. However, unlike other reflexes like sneezing and coughing, hiccoughs do not seem to have any constructive reason.
It has been said that main reason of hiccoughs is insufficient intake of oxygen in the air we breathe. Lots of persons have several beliefs about what really causes hiccoughs, and we do not state to know the accurate causes. However, when one hiccoughs come, there is an automatic or impulse action of a rapid inhalation, accompanied by the short pain or uneasiness caused when the top of the closed throat is inhaled against.
