Heartburn is a flaming sensation rising from the abdomen or lower chest and up towards the neck. It is caused because of acid from the abdomen backing up into the throat (swallowing pipe or oesophagus). In general, a valve at the lower end of the lower oesophageal sphincter (or swallowing pipe the) opens whenever we swallow something and closes when foodstuff has passed. But in case of some people it does not work correctly i.e. it does not close off when it should, mainly after a meal and it causes heartburn.
Heartburn may be occasional or it can occur frequently. It occurs frequently in patients who are already suffering from disease like acid reflux. Patients with acid reflux problem, heartburn generally gets worse after they eat anything, or whenever they lie down on bed or try to bend over.
Heartburn creates a lot of uneasiness and can affect feelings of healthiness and happiness when they come out regularly. Chronic heartburn may indicate other troubles like inflammation of the oesophagus or GERD, which can be more severe. In that case patients may need stronger medicines to control heartburn. The signs of heartburn can be recurrent and may last some weeks, months or longer if left untreated. They can also re-occur after proper treatment.
